Why upgrade your fuse board?

Your fuse board, or consumer unit, is what protects you and your home when something goes wrong. Older boards with rewireable fuses or no RCD protection cannot react quickly enough to an electric shock or an earth fault. A modern consumer unit can.

Current regulations require consumer units in homes to be housed in a non-combustible enclosure, which is why modern boards are metal. If yours is an older plastic unit or still has fuse wire, it is worth having it checked.

What is included

  • Removal of your old fuse box or consumer unit
  • A new metal consumer unit with RCD or RCBO protection
  • Surge protection where required
  • Testing of every circuit, with any faults explained to you before we go further
  • An Electrical Installation Certificate and building control notification

Testing comes first

A new board will not work properly if there are faults on the circuits connected to it. We test before we switch over, and if we find a problem we explain it and agree the fix with you before carrying on. No surprises on the bill.

Warning Signs

When to replace your board

Fuse wirePull-out fuses with wire inside are outdated and offer limited protection.
No RCDWithout RCD protection there is nothing to cut the power quickly if someone gets a shock.
Plastic unitOlder plastic consumer units do not meet current fire-safety requirements.
Constant trippingA board that trips for no clear reason needs investigating.
Buzzing or heatNoise, heat or scorch marks at the board need attention straight away.
Adding circuitsNew kitchens, extensions or EV chargers often need a board with more capacity.

Questions

Fuse Board Upgrades FAQs

How long does a fuse board upgrade take?

Most are completed in a single day. The power will be off for part of that time, and we will tell you roughly when.

Why do you need to test the circuits?

Modern RCD protection will trip if there is an existing fault on a circuit. Testing first means we find and fix those problems rather than leaving you with a board that keeps tripping.

Will I get a certificate?

Yes. You receive an Electrical Installation Certificate and the work is notified to building control.

Do I need a new fuse board to sell my house?

Not always, but buyers and surveyors often flag old fuse boxes. Upgrading beforehand can avoid delays.

Do you give fixed prices?

Yes. We look at your board and circuits and give you a fixed price before any work starts.
